This phone survey is a key component of the 2.7 million dollar grant awarded by National Institutes of Health (Award Number: R01GM108731, PI: Ling Bian). The overall goal of the NIH funded project is to use mobile phone data to construct contact networks in large urban areas, such as Buffalo, NY, and simulate how communicable diseases, such as flu, spread through the contact network.

The project contains a weekly, 5 minute Smartphone Survey asking questions regarding flu-like symptoms, protective actions, and frequently visited places. Users’ GPS data are collected in the background. At the conclusion of the survey, each person who fully participates will receive a $50 worth of award. The household will earn an extra $10 for each additional phone participant up to $20. A household of three phone participants can earn up to $200 worth of award.

The survey app integrates Apples Researchkit Framework to allow users respond to the survey easily through iPhone. Continued use of GPS running in the background can dramatically decrease battery life.
This app may use your location even when it isn’t open, which can decrease device battery life.
